For those interested in such things, it is all in the
explanatory section of Christidis&Boles2.
I am toying with the idea of offering a short COG presentation
entitled ‘Did Alexander the Great ever hear a koel?’. The below is a
possible slide – with full acknowledgment to the Handbook of the Birds of
the World.

Hi Susanne
Birds in
Backyards uses Eudynamys scolopacea for "Common Koel";
the COG
Photo Gallery uses Eudynamys orientalis for Eastern Koel
Birdpedia
recognises Eastern Koel Eudynamys orientalis bird found on our East
Coast; but it also recognises "Asian Koel" Eudynamys scolopaceus as
being a separate species, with an Asian distribution, including "Vagrant
to Christmas Island".
Beyond that I shall let the COG members with their HANZAB references take over
and give definitive opinions.
I find it safe to follow the COG listings.
Cheers
Denis
