Hi Geoffrey,

Sorry it was actually banded (not born) 19th Oct 2010 as a nestling. It would have been born 8 or 9th Oct 2010. My mistake.

It is still amazing how far it has travelled in such a short time.

Thanks,

Brani

Hi Chris and Damien,

Thank you very much for that information!

That is one of my banded birds born on the ANU campus 19th Dec last year. Combination as you said light blue over black over silver metal on the right leg. Google maps tells me the distance travelled is nearly 11kms which is a huge distance to travel for a such a small bird! It is very likely that the thornbill is a female as previous work has shown that females generally disperse farther from their natal territories than males.

I would be very interested to know if the bird has settled within your garden or if it is just flying through?

Again, thank you  for letting me know. I have been studying brown thornbills a year now and they never cease to amaze me.

Thanks,

Brani

Hi Chris,

There is a PhD student at BoZo working on Brown Thornbills who I am sure would be very interested to hear of an individual making it all the way to Holt!  His email:

Cheers,

Damien

Does anyone know who is banding Brown Thornbills?  I have one in the garden at the moment colour banded on the right leg, light blue over black over metal.  The metal band looks too long so the combination could be light blue over split black/white over metal.  I am assuming the work is being done at he Botanic Gardens in which case the bird has ended up in Holt.
