We were cycling up the hill on the old Federal Highway beyond the Yass
River this morning, and as we came around a bend, a WTE flew slowly
across the road at waist height about 50m ahead and disappeared under a
couple of small trees. We continued to cycle slowly and fairly silently
towards the trees, and when we were about 15m away, the eagle saw us,
hopped out onto the road, and took off up the road directly away from
us. Its wingspan was about the width of the road lane. From its dark
blackish-brown colour I took it to be a mature adult.
I couldn't see any carcase under the tree where it had been, but it
didn't seem to want to leave the area, as it circled off the road only
about a metre off the ground and perched in a tree about 50m away. It
was still there as we continued away from it up the hill.
