This is a drone fly of the family Syrphidae, the same family as hoverflies. They are nectar feeders. Probably a species of genus Eristalinus. Amazing looking eyes!

Can anyone ID this fly for me?  I have looked at European wasp pictures on the internet, and I have satisfied myself it is not a EW.  Taken at JWNR just before the rain started.
