Indeed, why kill a centipede in the garden? They are eaten by a variety of birds (including kookaburras and frogmouths), mammals, frogs and lizards, and themselves eat a variety of insects and other invertebrates. the Giant Centipede (Australia's largest, and probably what Bill found, since it has adapted well to urban areas) grows to 15 cm. Centipedes can bite, but would rather avoid you.
