Hi All,
Margaret Leggoe recently had a posting which implied creching by
Dusky Moorhen.
Nobody responded, and i am wondering whether there is any mention of it in
the literature.
This because i recently watched a group of eight moorchickens in charge of
a pair of adults and wondered whether they were a single brood.
Today i watched over a period of two hours nine cootlings still with
red-transparent heads being fed almost continuously by two adults.
One gets used to seeing duck families of this size, but waterhen?

Different topic: does anyone know how large a Rufous Songlark’s territory
would be?
Most mornings i walk a fairly linear 1
1/2 kms.
At the start of it there is usually a
Rufous Songlark ,
at the end of it likewise and at at least a couple of
points along the way.
How many songlarks? How can i tell ?
------------------------------------------------------
And different topic again?
On West Belconnen Pond are three, 3 to 4 month old cygnets in the company
of a single adult.
Somebody probably knows their exact age and if i searched amongst my photos
i could figure it out but 3~4 months is close enough.
For ~2 months there has been only one adult accompanying them.
47 days ago ‘another”pair started sitting on the
same nest.
Last sat-sunday 6 cygnets were hatched.
Today with two parents in charge this family took a tour of the pond.
The 2-parent male proceeding to chase the one parent ( i think female)
family at every opportunity.
It actually savaged one of the near adult birds.
Question: is it likely that one of the new pair is the missing bird from
the old pair?
