Hi ! Reading Rogers email brought back a memory from a few years back regarding much the same thing. On the large settling pond at the Queanbeyan Sewage works a feral goose had built a nest in the reed beds which I was keeping an eye on. It laid 6 eggs and was brooding them for a week or so when for some reason the bird seemed to have abandoned the nest. On checking to see why and if the eggs had been taken, I found that there was 4 left with 2 broken, but also in the nest was a huge dead carp lying in the dish of the nest. I don't know if the carp had been taking the eggs and had suffered the consequences of being trapped in the hollow of the nest, or if some irate fisherman had thrown the fish onto the nest. So Roger the question is, was the bird actually pulling the fish out of the water, remembering that a fish that size would weigh a bit, or was it the fish perhaps trying to rob the nest? I don't know if Carp actually rob nests but it would be good to find out. Bob Rusk |
