Hi Stephen,
You have probably thought of these points yourself but what I usually suggest to people buying is to look for:-
 
1/. Visibility poor light. Look into dark corners in the shop.
 
2/. Close focus. Focus on your foot and then objects a bit further away but if it won't focus closer than about 3m put it aside. It is annoying if you can't focus on a bird in a close-by bush.
