I was intrigued by the comment that this had been a cold winter.  It has seemed to me that the cold weather has gone on and on this year, but from looking at the records kept by a local person out here it seemed that it had been consistently cool (often down to -4 or -5) but no really cold nights (eg <-7).

So I had a look at the BoM climate data in http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.  It appears that the mean minimum temperatures for April and May were a little warmer (I haven't assessed significance) than the average for the Canberra Airport Comparison NSW site (site number 070014) while for June and July the mean min was almost equal the long term average.  However, looking at the mean monthly maximum temperature it was a tad (sorry about the technical term) warmer in every month.

There have been a couple of records of the bats out here this year so I will feed Ian's message in to the Carwoola rumour mill.
