Terry M. & Terry B. were bowling at Batemans Bay this week and stayed
next door to the marina on Beach Rd where there are extensive
sand/mudflats. One solitary bar-tailed godwit was a regular sighting
and about 9 eastern curlews appeared twice as well as pied
oystercatchers, terns crested and caspians plus silvergulls and masked
plovers. The eastern curlews were unmistakeable and one flew up from
water, banked overhead calling very distinctly. This is the query; one
very clearly had bright orange coloured upper legs from the knees up
to the body. This is not shown in my Slaters'field guide and I am
wondering if any better informed COG member could throw any light to
explain this definite observation. Off to Lake Eyre next Wednesday.
