This morning I visited
Brookes Hill Reserve, and concentrated on a small part of the hillside to the
left of the entrance. Birds were
very few and far between. This gave
me the time to study the vegetation a bit.
The trees, though tall, all had a very young appearance about them. The understory was mostly tussocky grass
with a few spindly little acacias.
Very few eucalypt saplings.
The “soil” mostly stones and gravel.
This led me to surmise
the area may have been severely logged in the past, and has not yet recovered
to the point where it provides an attractive nesting environment.
I would like to hear
(sorry, read) comments from anyone who knows a bit about the history of the
reserve. Next visit I will
concentrate on the creek to the right of the entrance.
