You all have your local ones, I'm sure. I've had the same pair for some years.
I occasionally feed them. Until a couple of weeks ago they were a family of
three, parents plus a remaining juv. They have a precise territorial divide
from the 3 further down towards Carnegie. Both groups line up on the reserve
each evening, each respecting a precise but invisible boundary although
sometimes you could throw a (fairly large) blanket over the lot. Two weeks ago
our 3 were joined by a 4th with which they are on good terms, perhaps feeling
reinforced. It is a young aggressive, very dark, bird. I am wondering if it
might not be, or become, a replacement for the old female.
Incidentally, I didn't mention it at the time but one afternoon about a month
ago I counted over 100 spread out across the grassy paddock in Symonston
between Mugga Mugga cottage and the olive plantation. Mainly juvs but also
some older birds.
And, of course, although no-one wants to mention it, they are calling in the
middle of the night again.

Magpie guarding the main gate into Callum Brae walked up to me with a quizzical
look as if expecting a titbit. We talked for a while, then as he could see I
was packing up the car anyway, he sauntered off.

Monday 16 August 2010: swooped by an Australian Magpie for the first time
this year, on the way to work and at the usual location, along Athllon
Drive, between Drakeford and Learmonth. No contact made this time.
