I had a look at the Newline Paddock on Sunday afternoon but didn’t see any W-b CS so interested
in Sue’s report. (Not sure what ‘the tip’ is - Sue?)
I did notice more Noisy Miners (20+) than I’ve seen there
over 17-odd years. Remains to be seen whether they are all colonisers or
just Winter wanderers. If the former, it could have implications for
other species.
Also noticed a Mistletoebird in the mistletoe-rich area over
the southern fence. I only mention this because of a conversation with
Martin about the seasonal occurrence of the species. I’d expect it to be
resident, subject to fruit availability. It was nearby that David Rosalky
reported a nest a few years ago.
A bunch of dark birds in a dead tree turned out to be a mix
of starlings and woodswallows, the proportions depending on the time and the
part of the tree. In the end I made it 12 woodswallows and 7 starlings,
although a LOT more starlings in the overall area. (For Elizabeth:
I say starlings rather than Starlings, because starling is not the prescribed
name. I am not fussed about how other people approach the matter.)
