John,
I saw about 20 or so Monarchs (= Wanderer or milkweed
butterfly; Danaus plexippus) at Plantation Point, Vincentia on
Jervis Bay two weekends ago. They were all fluttering about the trees right on
the headland and I suspected either a recent local emergence or they were part
of a 'wandering' flock if they do that locally.
As to what you saw a couple of months ago...

At that time (end of March) there were dozens of Meadow Arguses, then suddenly something three times the size and bright orange appeared.
