John,

I saw about 20 or so Monarchs (= Wanderer or milkweed butterfly;  Danaus plexippus) at Plantation Point, Vincentia on Jervis Bay two weekends ago. They were all fluttering about the trees right on the headland and I suspected either a recent local emergence or they were part of a 'wandering' flock if they do that locally.

As to what you saw a couple of months ago... ?

Can someone with access to the Dragonfly field guide tell me if there's a small sp of dragonfly (less than 3cm body length) in the ACT. i thoguht I saw one in Eddison Park yesterday.

Also on th einsect theme at Eddison Park, though about two months ago (sorry, forgot to post), I think I saw a Monarch Butterfly. At that time (end of March) there were dozens of Meadow Arguses, then suddenly something three times the size and bright orange appeared. I gave chase, but it vanished into Woden Cemetary (to feed on exotic cut flowers?).

:-)
