Rob,
these are certainly late breeding records, very good.
The Australasian Grebe is an opportunistic breeder in response to rainfall.
Our good run with rainfall over the last few months will have triggered this
late breeding (see also Canberra Bird Notes 32 (2) 2007: 102-105). Your
records would be a good addition to the COG data base, especially in light
of many observations for an increasing number of species that have responded
to the recent rains with out-of-season breeding.

Subject: Late breeding Grebes?
Hi,
I went for a short walk at the Fyshwick settlement ponds today and was
surprised to see two different Grebes each with a pair of very small
chicks in tow. Isn't it a bit late in the season for them to be breeding?
Rob
