Thank you, Frank, and the others that responded. I took the beast down to
the NSW Parks and Wildlife people in Queanbeyan but they were not really
interested in it. In any case I left it with them.

I didn't know what it was, but Meg Doepel reliably informs me it is a Blind
Snake http://australianmuseum.net.au/image/Blind-Snake-Illustration and is
quite an important find as they are not often seen. She suggests you should
report it to ACT Parks and put in a Vertebrate Atlas card to report its
location. Apparently Murray Evans from Wildlife is the person to contact.
