I'll have to spend some time on the weekend in the storage unit to see if I can 
dig out the field guide I bought in 2002.  The only text in romaji (roman 
characters) was the common name and species name as far as I can recall but the 
photographs were good and it was compact.  I bought it from the Shinjuku 
Kinokuniya bookstore near Tokkyu Hands which has a better foreign books section 
than the larger store which I think is on Shinjuku-dori.  For that reason the 
store near Tokkyu Hands may have a book in English.

Thanks to everyone who responded with offers of books or information about 
which libraries have holdings of guides!
