I ventured out for an hour this afternoon to the only place where I could think
that I could watch birds without getting too wet, ie Cygnus Hide at Kellys
Swamp. The rain has put a bit of water back and there is now an inch or so
there (max 2 inches, as judged by watching a Native Hen walk through the middle
from one end to the other). Of most note was 23 Latham's Snipe, all well out
in the open - many congregating near the log towards the education centre end
of the swamp. Also, 2 Spotted Crakes and 1 Baillon's Crake, also well out in
the open. Plus 2 Pied Stilts, 1 Black-fronted Dotterel, 1 Royal Spoonbill (no
sign of anything happening on 'spoonbill island'), 2 BTNHs, 1 Whistling Kite,
and the usual common species.
Regards
Frank Antram
