Azolla filiculoides and Azolla pinnata are both Australian native ferns
and also native to this area. So the chances are the birds have adapted
to them over a long time.

When they blanket an area the chances are they will reduce the evaporation.

I looked up azolla on the internet and did not get much joy. Can anyone
answer a few simple questions? Does the weed slow down the rate of
evaporation from Kelly's? Does the weed affect the organisms in the
water, that ducks, spoonbills and other birds like to eat? The birds
must pick up some of the weed as their bills go into the water.
