I had a koel experience this morning while watering the vegies. We've been hearing them both calling, the male less often than last year and the female more often. Today I heard sounds of pursuit then they both flew over me (Duffy St) a few seconds apart, both being noisily chased by their own swarms of wattlebirds, miners and currawongs. They also both gave the call I've come to associate with the female (someone else reported this recently, I think), the 3 or 4-note cry, of distress in this case. At first I thought we had more than 1 female but the male was definitely giving that call too. Soon afterwards I heard the male calling normally, though, so he must have felt safe enough to go back to business as usual.
