ACT MAPPED OUT FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES
The latest edition of the ACT Region Topographic Map, designed to
benefit emergency services
personnel on a variety of operations, has been launched today by
Minister for Police and Emergency
Services, Simon Corbell.
“It is essential our emergency services personnel have access to the
latest and most detailed
information possible, and this map gives a great insight into the local
topography in the ACT,” Mr
Corbell said.
“ESA employees are responsible for prevention, preparedness, response to
and recovery from
emergencies and this map will go a long way to properly equip personnel
with appropriate information.
The first detailed ACT region topographic map was produced in 2004 by
Geoscience Australia
following the 2003 Canberra Bushfires. It was established in
collaboration with a range of key
stakeholders including the ACT Emergency Services Agency using the best
data available at the time.
The 2009 edition was developed again by Geoscience Australia in
collaboration with various
government agencies including the ACT Emergency Services Agency, ACT
Planning and Land Agency,
ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services, NSW Department of
Lands, NSW National
Parks and Wildlife Service and emergency service volunteers from the ACT
and surrounding NSW
region.
“We are just heading into this years fire season, and this map will be
readily available in the case of any
emergencies,” Mr Corbell said.
“This tool will also be of significant assistance to emergency service
workers who may be involved
from time to time in rescue operations.
“The updated ACT Region Topographic Map is also expected to be popular
among the general
community. The previous edition sold more than six thousand copies to
recreational users due to its
relevance to ACT consumers.
“On behalf of the ACT Government I would like to thank Geoscience
Australia for producing such a
valuable resource for our emergency services and all the organisations
that have contributed to it.”
Statement Ends/Tuesday 17 November 2009
