You are correct. It certainly is a nankeen kestrel, I suggest a male. I am not sure what you are asking. Most raptors take food to a perch but sometimes they will eat something in flight but mainly only small things. This prey looks to me like a mouse (not a small item). Falcons commonly capture food with their feet but do not use the crushing with the feet that hawks do. In that case they usually kill with the beak, something they have already caught. If a mouse is still struggling in flight, they will probably try to bite the neck or head in flight to stop the struggling. That may be what you saw - or it may not............

Namadgi Visitors’ Centre today.

 

This bird, which this amateur has called a nankeen kestrel circled the same spot several times.  I dunno why, it already had its breakfast in its talons, and occasionally appeared to take a mid-flight snack, if that is at all possible.  A bit of fresh chicken would sure surpass a Qantas breakfast.
