Purple Swamphen chicks

Hello Rob. No, swamphens don't 'creche' but their chick situation is a little unusual. Like the majority of species (though unlike ducks for instance) the chicks rely on the parents to feed them, but unlike most of such species, which tend to be nest-bound initially, they follow the parents around from the very start.

cheers

Ian

Two Purple Swamphens were wandering back and forth right in front of a hide at Kelly's Swamp this afternoon. I don't know whether Swamphens creche like some other birds do? This particular bird (see attched) was certainly very busy with feeding four chicks.
