A few of us headed for the Brindies this morning.  After a slight detour off
Warks rd* (and thus hearing an Australian owlet-nightjar along Brindabella
rd), we made it to the Lees ck area around 6:15am and enjoyed watching so of
the summer migrants (Satin flycatcher, White-naped honeyeater) along with
residents (Pilotbirds, Eastern whipbirds, Grey fantails galore, White-throated
treecreeper and Satin bowerbirds).  A possible female Cicadabird flew over but
never landed to confirm ID.
In the wetter parts near the top of Warks rd we enjoyed some more recent
arrivals (Rufous fantail, Rose robin, plenty of Fantail cuckoos, and
Yellow-faced honeyeaters), along with the locals (Red-browed treecreeper and
Gang-gang cockatoo being highlights as always).
Bulls Head picnic area had a few flowering Grevillias which put on a great show
of Crescent honeyeaters.
A male Spotted quail-thrush in full song (see attached) was a highlight of the
day along Mt Franklin rd.  An Australian hobby also made a appearance, whilst
both Flame and Scarlet robins were regularly seen.  White-throated gerygone was
also seen when trying to find the previously-heard owlet-nightjar.
A quick stop at Urriara homestead revealed yet another Black-tailed Native-hen
for the ACT (where they were first seen a few years back), along with a number
of White-winged trillers, Dusky woodswallows and plenty of Rufous songlarks.
Lots of Hoary-headed grebes, along with Pink-eared ducks, Hardheads and
Australian shovelers on the dam (never seen it this full!).
A stop at Pearce's creek found it much less productive than a few months back,
though brief views of Chestnut-rumped heathwrens were had, good to see they are
still there.
Along the Murrumbidgee, some incredibly purple paddocks full of Paterson's
curse (and Black honeyeaters perhaps?).
We put in a final stop at Bibaringa, which looks somewhat changed from recent
roadworks, but still had something special with a Peregrine falcon flying
overhead.
** Warks road appears to be permanently locked between Yellow Rabbit rd and
Blundell's Creek rd, so looks like we have to go the long way from now on.
