There are certainly many in the Canberra area. After the January 2003
fires they were at a peak for much of the following year. Clearly
displaced. E.g. I heard them flying around above my house on the night
of the 18th January. I was doing a GBS for that time from my then
workplace on Tennant street Fyshwick. I came up with a rough count of
about 350 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos simultaneously present and
visible from my work desk, although there would have been about 500 of
them passing by during the course of one day and I think there were many
there for some weeks.

It look me a flip through the index of my field guide but I eventually
figured out that you're talking about Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos. I
saw one fly through our back yard in Kambah a few weeks ago and I agree,
it's fabulous to see such birds in suburbia or a major city. The most
I've ever seen in one place was a flock of about 50 in Port Macquarie
many years ago.
I'd love to get a really good recording of their call.
