Tharwa Sandwash this morning was alive with birds. I saw 37 species, including:
1 Dollarbird
5 Rainbow Bee-eater
1 Sacred Kingfisher
2 Tree Martin
3 Dusky Woodswallow, and 2 species that I have not seen there before -
White-winged Triller and White-browed Scrubwren.
With the addition of these last two, my list for the site over the
past 14 months (I go there at least once each month) now stands at 76
species. I have no idea how this might compare with any "official"
site list (if there is such a thing) but I think it does demonstrate
just how useful to birds (even if only transiently) this area is.
Plenty of the usual summer residents - Rufous Whistler, Australian
Reed-Warbler, Willie Wagtail and Grey Fantail.
Unlike the past two years, I may not be able to get there for this
weekend's Blitz so if anyone is looking for a pleasant place to survey
I can recommend it. It looks at its absolute best at the moment after
all the rain and the river is quite full - almost bank-to-bank in many
places. Keep an eye out for platypus too - and wombats if you go early
enough! Probably the only downside is that judging by the number of
wheel tracks that were there this morning, trail bike riders have
started using the area on the weekends again.
