And this is the time of year (and no less the rainy conditions) when the Rufous Fantails occur in their peak numbers, moving through Canberra and appearing in unusual habitats.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Rufous fantail and Varied sittellas at ANBG

This morning at the ANBG I was watching one of my fairy-wren groups just uphill from the Mallee area when I had one of those magic moments in the middle of a busy mixed feeding flock which, amongst the numerous HE and thornbills, white-throated TC and fantails, included both Varied sittella and a Rufous fantail.

Its the first time this season I've seen either species in the botanic gardens - I have only previously seen the sitellas much further up-hill near the back fence.

Regards,
Lucy Aplin
