Last time I went to Sturt National Park (NW corner of NSW), I picked up a dead one of these (Australian Pratincole) on the road and donated it to the Nat Parks office in Tibooburra. There were many of them and they are very elegant and nice to look at.

I am surprised at the proportion of the participative component of this chatline that correctly nominated Australian Pratincole:  Anthony O, Harvey P, Paul Taylor, Philip V, Tobias, Old Bushperson John Layton, Con Boekel.  No wrong guesses.

As some mentioned, it is a striking species to come across out in those open spaces.
