would suggest by far most likely they are Short-tailed Shearwaters, popularly
called muttonbirds, (that move south along the coast in thousands at this time
of year, heading for their breeding islands around Victoria and Tasmania). And
I'm guessing, if not them, then another of the various all dark shearwaters. And
may have been a mix of species. Some people even say they can pick the
difference between these species at that distance............ I
can't.
