Hello everyone
On Monday 28 September 4 COG Woodland surveyors enjoyed a
sunny, but brisk and breezy morning from 7.30 to 10.30 visiting the eight
woodland sites on the Majura Firing Range. The wind made it a little
difficult, and the overall result was OK rather than good.
There were very few highlights. Hooded Robin
noticeably absent from sites 1 and 3 where sometimes they may be found.
Brown Treecreeper heard calling across the road from site 1,
but investigation could not produce a sighting. Milburn, Con Boekel, Roger
Curnow and myself couldn’t turn one up, and the calling ceased.
There were a few gerygones about, Western and White-throated.
A first, as I recall, from Site 2, the Grenade Range car park
,were quite a few Red-rumped Parrots, appearing to be nesting. Pallid
Cuckoo also observed there. A Horsfield’s Bronze-cuckoo was observed at
another site.
This year there appears to be more Striated and Buff-rumped
Thornbills about.
Complete lack of honeyeaters, except for one Red Wattlebird,
one Eastern Spinebill, and one Yellow-faced Honeyeater.
Migrant representation included an Olive-backed Oriole, and
a couple of Rufous Whistlers.
We only had the one vehicle, so there was a bit of ferrying
to and fro. Con’s GPS readings reminded me that the Range
encompasses two full grid squares (N12 & N13) and a bit of a third
N14, with 3 sites in N12, 4 in N13 and 1 in N14.
Cheers
Paul
