Early this morning I saw many of the birds already reported.  A group of five black-tailed native hens was fossicking around in grassland off the south-west perimeter of Kelly’s swamp.  Just as I was leaving, circa 7-45 am a humongous fox trotted unconcernedly across the same patch and then headed towards the education centre.  The signs saying 1080 baits are laid fortunately make people put their dogs on leads, even though they are not supposed to be there at all.  But neither the foxes or rabbits seem able to read the signs.

The fox’s presence triggered an excellent demonstration of nature’s emergency alarm system.

Have also seen a well fed cat on the road between sewage ponds and the wetlands on another occasion.  Hope the cat was feasting on rabbits.
