Hello Robin (and anyone else interested). The shrub is Hakea decurrens (formerly locally included in H. sericea). And you need a very good beak indeed to get into its fruit!

cheers

Yesterday afternoon on the powerline trail east of Mt Ainslie I came across 6 YTBC feeding at eye height in shrubs/small trees (c. 3 m high) beside the track. They allowed me to approach within a few m.
One of the small tree spp was I think Drooping She-Oak, the other was unknown to me. There were several  in a clump, all less than 4 m high, v. spiky ?leaves, were in flower(white), and with fruit cones, some of which were split cleanly. I went back this morning to photo the trees. Any ID suggestions welcome.
YTBC

Many thanks,
Robin Hide
