Thanks for the update on their distribution and relative "common-ness".
Leo Berzins has also told me something similar.
 
I was working off Birds in Backyards (Australian Museum - Sydney) which reports them going as far as Mallacoota (Victoria), but "numbers falling abruptly south of Sydney".
and Birdpedia, which says they stop at Jervis Bay.
 
I have personal reports that they are "common" north of Newcastle.
