THE NATIONAL GULLERY OF AUSTRALIA, at Lotus Bay, near the
yacht club. This is a modest one, as gulleries go, the birds having
nested in recent years on the decks and in the cockpits of the moored
boats. Compared to their raucous cousins at the coast, Canberra’s
gulls, like its public servants, are of a retiring nature. The coastal
gulls (like public servants in this respect) favour takeaway pizza, pie crusts
and French fries, while the Canberra birds get their tucker at the Mugga Lane
landfill where a large flock can generally be found during working hours.
