See for some information about Ms Thwaites, who seems highly deserving of recognition in the Mt Ainslie area. Google did not turn up anything helpful about Socks.

for those who haven’t visited Mt Ainslie recently - during the last month or so, new signposts have sprouted on all the major tracks, which have been christened with (new?) names. 
Some of the west side ones seem to recognize people (e.g. Honor Thwaites…but Socks?):


 while the east side ones seem starker and more functional:
