Managing the ecology of the Tibetan
plateau: Interactions between livestock grazing, plateau pikas and avian
biodiversity
Tony Arthur, CSE
Significant and potentially irreversible
erosion is increasing on the grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau. There is some
acknowledgment that overgrazing by livestock has contributed to this, but there
is also a strong belief by local people that plateau pikas make a significant
contribution to the problem. Pikas are also thought to compete with
livestock for forage. In this seminar I present results from a study
designed to assess: (1) whether the current method of pika control is
effective; (2) whether current livestock grazing practices affect pika
populations and their control; and (3) relationships between livestock grazing,
pikas and other native biodiversity.
About the speaker:
Dr Tony Arthur is a quantitative
ecologist with CSE who specialises in understanding the drivers of animal
populations and the implications this has for their management. A
large body of his worked has focussed on interactions between wildlife and
agricultural systems.
