My
suggestion mirrors Ian's. It is a rather annoying call to have outside the
window during the night and one that is hard to forget. That is a pretty good
description.

Sounds very like a Brush-tailed Possum to
me (albeit perhaps a bit mellower than the Turner Gang).

"Help me,
Martin.... The other night (at about 10.30pm) I heard something in the
trees on the neighbour's place that sound a bit like a
kookaburra clearing his throat: sort of deep raspy (growling almost)
Whooop-Whooop usually/often followed by a chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck (this was
the bit that sounded like a kookaburra clearing his throat). Maybe not
even a bird. We - Hilary and I - have heard this previously, never
predictably. We've both been out with troches looking for it and never
found it. Any ideas?"
