Hi Julian,
Two points, The ACT Atlas, as good as it is, is now quite old in its
data. More importantly in this case, yes finches do build roosting nests
sometimes, so that is a possibility. It could be a breeding attempt
too........

Subject: Late nesting Double-barred Finches?
Two weeks ago I was surprised to see a DBF carrying nesting material
to what looked like a nest under construction in Callum Brae. This
is very late for them to be nesting, at least according to the ACT
Atlas. At the time I assumed it might be practicing, or maybe they
built roosting nests. On returning to CB on Monday I checked again
-- as I walked past the nest, a single bird flew out which I assume
means they are actually sitting.
But I don't know if they build roosting nests in the wild, or if they
would occupy them in the daytime. (The nest is roughly spherical
grass exterior with a bit of a spout).
If not then maybe this is a late-breeding local record attempt.
Julian
