At a time when most local woodland areas seem to have gone pretty quiet,
it's good to be able to report that this area is still active. Fuscous
HEs are abundant, and pleasingly there are Diamond Firetails scattered
(albeit a bit surprisingly as individuals) from the park boundary to the
works depot. Also Restless Flycatchers and a couple of adult male
Scarlet Robins with a surplus of testosterone. For the half hour I
watched them they faced each other from adjacent trees, singing and
doing little display flights. Every so often they would get closer and
closer, until less than half a metre apart they were wing-fluttering and
the song was replaced by sparrow-like chirping. On one occasion it came
to blows, and they tumbled locked together almost to the ground. It
would seem an odd time of year for such macho silliness, but I'm just a
featherless old bloke, so what would I know?
A bit further south the woodlands at the start and end of the Old
Boboyan Road still seem to support healthy populations of Brown
Treecreepers; also some Southern Whiteface at the end carpark.
On the other hand it's now a long time since I saw D Firetails and
Hooded Robins at the Boboyan Rd/Honeysuckle Ck Rd intersection, where
they used to be reliable.
good birding all
