Many birders, and others who venture into the bush, carry personal location beacons. Commencing early this month the 121.5 MHz analogue beacons are no longer detected by satellites so should no longer be used. Users should replace them with the vastly superior 406 MHz digital beacons, preferably models that are GPS capable.

Apparently the batteries used in PLBs/EPIRBs are environmentally problematic so arrangements for safe disposal of old beacons have been put in place: in Canberra we can drop them off at Battery World, 95 Grenville Court, Phillip. Details at http://beacons.amsa.gov.au/disposal/Beacon_Disposal.asp
