Martin,

An interesting record of PBQ breeding. And yes, although it was Michael Maconochie who observed the breeding described in our report in CBN several years ago (Maconachie, Michael and Harvey Perkins (2005). Brindabella breeding of Painted Button-quail. Canberra Bird Notes 30(2): 81-82.), it was also a high elevation event (I'm pretty sure the location was a little shy of Piccadilly Circus).

Today's ANPS walk was to Chalet Rd off the Mt Franklin Rd between Bulls Head and Mount Franklin.

Almost as soon we left the cars (at the Mt Franklin end of the road I flushed a covey of 6 quail-type birds.  I didn't get a very good look at them then but a few hours later when returnign to collect the cars saw 1 adult and 2 much smaller Painted Button-quail (PBQ) standing in the middle of the road.  (They left promptly for a less Subaru-enhanced area but I got a reasonable look.)  I think this is close to the area where Harvey Perkins and Michael Maconochie have recorded this species breeding (any comment Harvey?).

Moving right along we also recorded flame robin, pilotbird, and red-browed treecreeper as well as good numbers of lyrebirds(not suprisingly only superb), yellow-faced and white-naped honeyeaters, various thornbills and gang-gang cockatoos.

Althugh the aea i distressingly invaded by Scots thistles and mullein a COG walk along the road could provide an interesting counterpoint to the renowned Warks Road expedition.
