Hi all,
I headed up early to Corin Road this morning and was rewarded with some good ACT birds. After a fairly slow start at the Woodlands Reserve, other than numerous Yellow-faced, White-naped, and White-eared Honeyeaters I drove on to the dam and birded the woodland on the far side of the dam wall. There were Flame Robin and Satin Flycatchers feeding young here and a Brown Goshawk circled over the dam wall. On the drive back along Corin Road, I stopped sevaral km down from the dam as I heard a Brush Cuckoo but couldn't see it from the road. Then a Cicadabird started calling from tall eucalypts on top of the ridge - half an hour later, after some serious bush bashing to scramble up the slope (and well scratched shins) and chasing the calling bird, I finally got some great views of a male Cicadabird calling and searching for food through the canopies.
I thought this would probably be the bird of the day but as I got down towards the Gibraltar Falls area a Brush Bronzewing raced across the road (I had already seen a dozen or so Common Bronzewing along various parts of Corin Road) and dropped down on the forest edge in some lowish shrubby/heath. This is an area 10.9km from the start of Corin Road (where it joins Tidbinbilla Road) and there is about 100m of low shrubs on either side of the road. I set up through this dense growth (collecting more scratches for the days effort) and got some nice views as the bird flushed from the forest edge and this time continued deep into the woods. There were also about 30 White-throated Needletails above the ridge top here (another 10 or so at Corin Dam earlier in the morning).
There was a White-necked Heron at the small dam on your right ,about 1km before Birrigai turnoff ,as you are heading back towards Tidbinbilla NR from Corin Road.
Off course, I also stopped off quickly at Tidbinbilla to twitch Steve's Bellbird.
Cheers Dan
