When I lived at Ayr in N Qld as a kid Cockatiels used to come to the golf
course there in 1000s. There was no spilt grain there as none was grown or
handled in the area. It is a sugar cane and water melon growing district but
the semi arid vegetation comes close to the coast in the district. I
wouldn't be surprised if we got lots of Cockatiels in the ACT with a little
more climate change or a severe drought inland. I saw a flock of 8
Cockatiels near the airport about 1984. That was near the end of a severe
drought in the ACT which probably extended into western NSW.
In 1984 Crested Bronzewings were a rarity in the ACT but their numbers built
up steadily since. Now they are very common.
