Many thanks Frank. I suspect the only way we'll know the relative ages of the chicks - given the difficulty of viewing the RH nest - is by working back from the time they leave the various nests. There are two quite active youngsters in the right hand nest (as Martin says - best viewed from the bank between Bittern & Cygnus hides). They were being fed by the adult standing over them. These chicks look to me to be more advanced than the ones in the lower left hand nest. The ones in the left hand nest were keeping very low and there was little sign of movement during the 15 minutes or so that we watched that nest. The adult in the left hand nest was upright on one leg, with its bill tucked under its wing, and took no interest in the chicks lying exposed beneath it. The top nest still has an adult sitting on the nest, presumably still on eggs. |
