In a short visit to Callum Brae on Saturday I found quite a few shy nesters but not much else.  In an hour through the north-west corner around 10am, not one single small bird - no thornbills, no finches and the few fairy-wrens were confined to the zoo site.

The A. GrebesKookaburra and yet again a mixed Long-billed / Little Corella pair were all nesting, and Dollarbirds, Leaden Flycatcher, Willie Wagtail  and Sacred Kingfisher looked as though they were nesting or about to. The grebes kookaburras and sacred kingfisher were all inside the old zoo site.

The Goshawks are finally breeding with two (I think) young in the nest.   The adult swooped me several times (while hanging on to half a rabbit) and called repeatedly from high branches when I was first 50 m or so from the nest (which I only discovered because of the bird's attacks), and continued as I retreated until I was about 100m away.

Emacs!

Callum Brae is still a bit sad, weighed down by the combined effects of roos and drought.  Albeit now with a superficial green tinge.
