I had hoped that someone would pick me up about the Mugga Zoo. It
should become part of the Callum Brae reserve. But it is the exotics
in there that attract the small birds that like such vegetation for
their nests. We did not see many small birds there yesterday
afternoon--wrong time of day. But the dam there has water in it for
much longer than the dams elsewhere at the reserve. and there seems
to be a resident pair of grebes, which nest each year.
The whole area is pretty awful, with debris from the zoo, taken over
now by lots of honeysuckle. And people have used it as a place to
park overnight, leaving more debris. The entrance has now been
closed by a structure of large logs. The ranger said that this was
done (by them?) to stop such people going in there. Geoffrey, when
you survey Callum Brae, do you include the old zoo?
