Koel in Fraser

Geoffrey's posting caused me to think about a comparison of the most recent GBS years (which I have taken as 25 - 27) and the earlier years of the GBS.

A first point is that 344 (61%) of the 556 observations of Koel have occurred in the last 3 years!   That seems to indicate something dramatic has changed.

To overcome this disparity in numbers I have expressed the number of observations per week as a percentage in the attached graph.  It is clear that the range of weeks  in which the species has been recorded has moved out at both ends of the season.

One should be careful about offering impressions without counting, but I
think the current spate of reports (whatever prompts them - I have had
calling for 2 weeks) is about the same as last year  -  which was certainly
an exceptional year.  A few months ago I summarised dates of last year's
reports in anticipation of more discussion.

It remains for us to receive a re-airing of Michael Lenz's excellent
suggestion of last year for some assessment to be made of number of
individuals.  This leads to a discussion of the audible range of the calls.
We had evidence of their carrying for more than a kilometre, which means
different suburbs could be reporting the same individual.

Koel caliing in O'Connor/Turner this morning.  I went out to look for
it but it found me instead.  It alighted in a large Blakely's Red Gum
right opposite our house.

I don't recall so many spring observations  in previous years.  It
looks as though this species has undergone a significant change of
status.  Interestingly, Red Wattlebird breeding activity is the
highest I have observed in our area.  The sound of begging young is
omnipresent.  Is there a link?
