Breeding records (dependent young) this week for Australian Reed-Warbler, Eastern Spinebill and Brown-headed Honeyeater at Tuggeranong Office Park (TOP), within the Tuggeranong Town Centre.  It shows what is possible when attention is paid to creating suitable bird habitat in an urban environment, in particular a large office complex.

For those not familiar with TOP, the complex has an artificial river corridor running between the buildings, generously planted with a variety of eucalypts, casuarinas, acacias, grevilleas, croweas, correas, lomandras, xanthoreas, banksias, hakeas, various reeds and native grasses.  Even the car park at the front of the complex is full of native plants, but sadly has been in decline since the drought.  Other breeding records for this location include Pied Currawong, Magpie-lark, Noisy Friarbird, Australian Magpie, Australian Raven.  Sadly, the new building for the town centre, the Caroline Chisolm Centre next door, is merely a concrete and glass monolith.  Considering it has been built some 16 years after TOP, and in an age of increased attention to environmental impacts, it is a sad indictment to what can be achieved.
