Dear Goggers - help with ID
At a recent social function I was asked by 2
local landholders what are the 'large black cockies with the red in their
tail. We have each seen a couple of times in the past months'. The people
concerned saw Gang-gangs often and knew they were not Gang-gangs. As they could
well have been Glossy Blacks John & I went hunting for some Casuarina we
remembered seeing when on a road survey for the fire brigade some years ago.
We found them on private land a few kms from our
home at Quailrise.
They were about half way up the hill on a dry north
western slope at about alt.900m. There was at least half an acre of
them.
Would anyone be able to tell us if they are
Allocasuarina verticillata. The cones are a
little more cylindrical than the drawing of Allocasuarina verticillata in the NP
guide to Native Trees of the ACT but they definitely have the 'collar' where the
cone joins the cone stem.
We would like to plant out material that would be
useful to the Glossy Blacks
