I have heard and seen Tawny Frogmouths call at different times of the
day several times, so don't dismiss the possibility altogether.
Years ago, before the Pied Currawongs took over the tiny patch of
reserve behind us in Cook, Tawny Frogmouths nested nearby. This was
preceded by the male calling insistently on several late winter
afternoons from around 1530 or 1600 hrs onward. It took about 10 days
before he got a reply, and this was after dark. There was a rapturous
meeting in a stringybark. The ensuing nest was also in a
stringybark, and during the day there were occasional quiet oom-oom
contact calls from the male sitting not far away.
Earlier this year - whooops! last year - on 22.03.2006, I reported
another tawny frogmouth incident, when a male maintaining his perch
about 5 ms away, gave an oom-oom call before mid-day. It seemed to
have been a contact call, as two other TFs arrived at dusk and they
all went off hunting together.
